It doesn’t take a great deal to start reversing the alarming rate of town centre decline that towns such as Penrith are experiencing. Unless swift and effective action is taken in the very near future, our town centres will become deserted ghost towns.
Labour proposes a number of actions that will halt this decline. First, there needs to be fairer business rates for high street shops, pubs and markets. This is an overhead that the thriving on-line retail sector don’t have to worry about. In addition, a Labour Government would improve bus services, oppose the closure of post offices and banks, outlaw charges for cash machines and establish regional development banks to invest in local businesses and communities.
Penrith has a growing number of empty retail premises and the only remaining post office is about to close its doors. These few measures proposed above would make a huge difference and roll back the terminal decline. Another reason to VOTE LABOUR in local and national elections.
